Modern Game

My Brother Hears "WHAT IS THAT" all the time with these little pranksters!  Believe it or not, it's a Chicken!  Bred from fighting breeds in the past, the Modern Game has a spunky personality and will happily strut its stuff in the show room.  Once a Fighting bird in England, they are now one of the most popular show birds.

My brother dodes on these birds, but he has too! Once again, these are not for the passive breeder or the back yard flock. Because of their delicate characteristics, Moderns require a little more care than other breeds.  They can freeze to death at just 35 degree's. We keep heat lamps on our cages. Their long legs make them more likely to suffer from tendonitis and breaks. And if they get sick? They die.

Production is poor, both in meat and eggs. My brother says "wrap that in a Tortilla and you Still won't have a meal" . Hens are not the best mothers simply because they do not possess the body to brood a good-sized batch of eggs or chicks.

If housed properly, they do make excellent pets! They are easy to take care of if you provide them everything they need! The coop must be one that can be completely closed off to prevent drafts and chilly breezes  but with good ventilation. And they need plenty of room to stretch those long legs!!

If you think a chicken can't be trained? It is particularly important that Moderns be trained !! They have to pose on command!  Winning can come down to something as simple as who poses best!  Just like my Old English, My Bothers cocks must be dubbed in order to be shown.
